Imogen Cunningham, San Francisco, CA Photograph - Limited Edition of 1

I forgot to bring my camera the day I visited Imogen Cunningham for her portrait. Cunningham, at 91, was still playful and high spirited. We started talking instead. As Cunningham recalled, once, Ansel Adams had done an advertising campaign for Yuban coffee, with one of his Yosemite pictures on the outside of the can. Ansel sent a five-pound can to her. After enjoying the coffee, she put a bunch of dirt and some seeds in the can and sent it back to Ansel with watering instructions. He did as she directed and got a strong and healthy plant. And then one day his buddy the sheriff came to visit and looked at it and said that he could arrest him for growing dope. Ansel got on the phone to cuss her out. She just thought it was hilarious. Imogen invited me back the next day for lunch and to do the pictures, which was when I got to captured the ever-playful spirit of her in this portrait. She passed away about a year later.
