The bison is the largest land mammal in Europe, weighing up to 1000 kilograms and standing over 1.9 m tall. It was once present throughout the European continent. Due to excessive hunting, poaching, but also the reduction and fragmentation of the habitat, the bison disappeared from Romania more than 200 years ago. It suffered a similar fate throughout Europe, ending up being considered an endangered animal.The last stronghold of the bison was in the Carpathians, before they disappeared for good, in 1790. Today, Romania is one of the 9 European countries along with Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, Russia and Germany where the bison live in the wild.
