About The Artwork

Traditional enlargement on Fujicolr paper This Sun cycle was to be a solar response to my first Moon photogramms. But suddenly the technique is blocked (it is impossible to insolate properly a support sensitive to sunlight), then chance interferes: by forgetting the paper in the sun by mistake, the imprint is formed by itself, the white turns blue. Old principle of photolysis rediscovered without my knowledge, the same one with which Talbot made his photogenic drawings. Then, always by chance, I discover that the sweat of the body, then the breath, have a chemical action on the paper, generating different colors according to the heat of the body and the sun and I need no more chimicals. So I leave the traditional photogram behind and start experimenting with this incredible inversion of logic: creating color images on black and white paper and make them appear just through sunlight. What questions me the most is that the image here is no longer a mere representation or imprint of the subject: it is the very transfer of the subject, from its own substance. The photograhic image is a real effect and contains the subject. It is very close to the “icon” in the historical sense of the term. In order to keep these unstable images in the light that generated them, I had to use the camera. The photo thus became what it had never ceased to be: an art in space and time.

Evelyne Coutas lives and works in Paris. She studied architecture and sculpture at l’École nationale des Beaux- Arts de Paris. In 1983, Coutas introduced photography into her work, using light and the photosensitive properties of the silver halide process to question the representation of reality within photography. Her first photographic work, “La chambre obscure” (“The Darkened Room”) – a series of photograms created in the moonlight of her bedroom – inspired her to explore further aspects of the medium. Combining experimentation with light and atypical photographic techniques while exploring her unique creative expression, Coutas’ images poetically question the delicate relationship between form and substance.
