About The Artwork

This is a very special image for me. I took it in a wilderness area named Mokala National Park, in South Africa's Northern Cape region. That area had only fairly recently become protected wilderness. When I grew up the exact place where the image was taken, was part of my father's cattle ranch. Even though it was a ranch, my dad set a large area aside exclusively to protect the indigenous wildlife of the area. There were always Kudus around, even in those days. Dad was a conservationist throughout his life and instilled a deep respect and love for nature in me. It broke his heart when he had to sell the ranch to cover his hospital expenses. On the day that I took the picture I was driving around, desperately searching for a worthwhile subject while the sun was sinking towards the horizon. Just when I was about to give up, I came across this bachelor herd of bulls. I know Dad would have been proud of the picture. This artwork is available as a pigment ink print on museum quality archival fine art paper, printed to the highest professional standard. For custom sizing please contact curator@saatchiart who will liaise with me, to meet your requirements.

Jan qualified as a graphic designer and filmmaker from the Pretoria Technikon and is in the process of completing a Masters degree at the University of Cape Town. Being raised on a farm in the middle of South Africa instilled a great love of nature, as well as a passion for exploration and learning in him. Together with a desire to create stunning images, he was inspired to venture further afield - to 50 countries across the globe, from the natural paradise of the Okavango Delta in Botswana, to war torn in Kabul, Afghanistan, whilst working as a freelance documentary cameraman for broadcasters such as National Geographic Television, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, CNN and the BBC. This has given him a rare glimpse into the lives and cultural practices of many different people and an insight into the environmental challenges that we, as a civilization, face. His work is informed by a wide range of interests - from Natural Science to History, Music, Journalism, Film and Art. Jan is inspired by the Dutch and Flemish Masters' use of light and by fellow artists like Obie Oberholzer, Nick Brandt, Alejandro Chaskielberg and David Goldblatt.
