In the past, everything was better! Früher war alles besser! More precisely: easier – at least in pre-renaissance portrait paintings. Besser gesagt: leichter, 
zumindest in der Portraitmalerei vor der Renaissance. Dot, dot, comma, dash - smiley (madonna-)face in a flash. Da genügten „Punkt, Punkt, Komma, Strich“ und fertig war das (Madonnen-)Mondgesicht! But then, da Vinci, Botticelli, Dürer & Co. appeared and asked: "Why easy, if it works complicated, too?!" Doch dann kamen da Vinci, Botticell, Dürer & Co. und fragten sich: „Warum einfach, wenn´s kompliziert auch geht?!“ Searching the perfect image – the blueprint of beauty – they dissected, sketched and scaled the human face.
