The Inner Harbour of Victoria, sits on the shores of the ancestral lands of the Salish Songhee First Nation. And their sleeping language of Lekwungen rests on the edge of extinction. In 2018, with the last living first language speaker of Lekwungen, a concerted effort was put forth by the Songhee First Nations to preserve their language and bring it back from its perilous brink. The knowledge and traditions that are not passed along, silently slip away and there are some entire oral languages that hang in the balance of life and death with one remaining soul. LEKWUNGEN LULLABY was made on what would have been my maternal grandmother's 95th birthday, standing along the docks of the Inner Harbour in Victoria. It offers a poignant reminder to me that the sleeping language of Lekwungen still hangs in the balance and that with the passing of a single life, a entire spoken language could pass into an endless sleep. _______________________________________________ EXCLUSIVE COLLECTOR CONTENT Receive exclusive collector content from JL Robertson and stay up-to-date on new photographic projects, new releases including pre-release privileges for new limited edition prints, exclusive events and more! B: 1973, Ontario, Canada. I am a visual artist working primarily in contemporary abstract art and nature photography. I have been seeing the world through a lens for over 40 years. Summers filled with camping and canoeing, I quickly fell in love with campfire smoke rising over a misty lake, dew-kissed spider webs and the night sky mirrored in a still lake. It was here that I learned to see - to be observant - to notice details, patterns and textures. It was here that I learned to listen - for a splash, a beaver tail slap, the hoot of an owl. It was here that I learned to wait patiently - for a loon to surface or for a wolf to howl. Light, time, motion, textures and shadows are my raw materials. I enjoy capturing details that often go overlooked in our busyness, calling attention to them through photography. I like to push the boundaries of what I can see with my eyes. I want to create images that speak to my soul. And should they bring you to a place of even momentary contemplation, they will have found their wings and been given flight. I invite you to visit my website to learn more about my artistic inspiration and process.
