Looking Up Photograph - Limited Edition of 5

Looking Up - Rotterdam This image is part of an ongoing project/love affair with the streets of Rotterdam. As in most of my personal (non-conceptual) work, my intention is to distill a scene down to it's core emotional narrative. Through the use of framing, lighting and tonal adjustment I try to whittle away the non-essential within the scene and illuminate the element that made me feel, whatever it is that I felt when I experienced the scene. What moved me in this scene is the juxtaposition in shape and tone. The human elements are hard and uniform in tone with square straight edges that contrast with the perfect tonal gradation of the sky and organic cloud shapes. While shooting I waited for a pedestrian to pass, to add an extra element but in reviewing the shot images I preferred the simplicity and stark honesty of this unpopulated version. Each print is hand numbered and signed, and printed to museum quality at approximately 105 by 70cm on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag with a 5cm white border.
