About The Artwork

Following with last week post on San Pedro de Atacama here are additional images of desert and clouds. While planning this trip, a friend told me that I should rent a 4x4 vehicle, however they were all unavailable. He also recommended to look for a high location to watch the sunset. Using Google Earth and Apple Maps, found that the best location was Mirador de Kari - Piedra del Coyote. This vantage point overlooked the Valley of the Moon; however, it was closed due to Covid-19. Asked at Local Guides if someone knew of a location with a vantage point but did not get any indication. On our way to our hotel, I saw an alternative location, that could work, discovering it was called Mirador Likan-Antay. We drove near sunset time, but when we arrived, many people had thought the same as me. Started looking for different points of view, you could see a section of the Valley of the Moon. But they we were on the wrong side as the images would come out back lighted. Panning my camera around, settled for distant clouds forming over the Tebenquiche Lagoon that we visited earlier that afternoon. From time to time I would swing the camera towards the rock formation that were backlight with many expectant visitors. The distant clouds started turning pink, but the view was not what I was expecting, in addition it had haze. Suddenly a few small clouds formed at a closer distance and with a curious design, which I share here. I should note that I was testing a new expensive Polarizer filter that I purchased from a very reputable store. It was only that night when I transferred the images to my laptop, that found the flaws of the glass. After discussing with the manufacturer that found out that it was a forged version. Fortunately, Adobe Photoshop was able to correct the unwanted darker shades that were ruining the images. All in all, I was able to register the desert and clouds at San Pedro de Atacama. Unframed, Chromogenic paper: C-flex-Poly-based paper high-gloss (Fujiflex Crystal Archive silver halide photographic paper using a Lambda machine). Signed certificate of authenticity.

Artist Statement I am a passionate photographer, blessed with curious eyes that are constantly amazed by the forms and designs produced by water, and the combination of its temperature and light. No matter how many pictures I take of the same shot, every time I witness a very different expression. My camera and I have been traveling around the world since 1977, registering its shapes and essence, which I have been sharing through large prints, as an homage to its abundance, fragility, and essential existence; trying to convey the feeling I had at the time of the capture, registering most of the time in color and sometimes in monochrome. History It was late 1955 when my eyes peeped at the city of La Paz near the high Andes. Since then, they have learned by capturing sparkles of light. Started at the age of 10 with oil painting and playing in darkroom (full equipment I discovered in my home basement), later taking pictures of what my eyes noticed. Took as much photography courses as I could. Still continue learning and testing/using new digital tools. The influence of Ansel Adams and Vincent Van Gogh work has forged my technique to pursue the chase of Water and capture its beauty, creating a large portfolio during my visits to more than 40 countries. Living in 10 of them and settled at the small town of Calera de Tango in Chile. My work was done using a medium format film camera, and currently with a digital camera. I try to capture the beauty of water in all its forms; denouncing many times the little interest that our civilized world invests in its conservation and preservation. Printing mainly on large size fine art photographic paper, in Color as well as Black & White. The passion of portraying water was funded by me, as well as most of the exhibits I made, except for a few that Sony Chile provided equipment and funding for printing and framing. Water, an important resource, source of life, and protagonist of my exhibitions around the world, that converge between the look of the paused movement, preserving it for future generations, as is the case of certain images that I took at a glacier that has disappeared in less than 20 years.
