About The Artwork

Like Georgia O'Keefe , Charles Sheeler, Charles Demuth, and other artists, I am interested in capturing "the mystique of the skyscrapers," enduring symbols of our modern world. Living in the midst of NYC—as O'Keefe said "in the heart of a roaring city"—and an architect by training and career, as New York architect Claude Bragdon wrote many years ago, "Not only is the skyscraper a symbol of the American Spirit—restless, centrifugal, seriously poised—but it is the only original development in the field of architecture to which we (Americans) can lay unchallenged claim." New York City, for all its iconic imagery, is not simple to portray; to paraphrase O'Keefe, is is necessary to depict its character and the New York experience "as it is felt." This photo series attempts to convey the dynamism of this New York experience.

Steeped in architecture from an early age, Maria Sevely entered architectural school at fifteen and went on to study architecture, architectural history and fine art at Wellesley, Harvard and RISD. Maria’s background includes substantial work as a design associate with three of the world’s leading architectural firms—Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, Richard Meier, and Philip Johnson—often working closely with the founding principals. She was Senior Project Designer for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., amongst other projects with the Pei firm and Project Architect for Philip Johnson’s last major project, the Cathedral of Hope. With FORM, she is working to develop upon this foundation, utilizing computer capabilities to develop new geometries and advance the application of an analytical design approach for projects to date in New York, the northeastern United States, and China. Architecture is one of several interconnected areas of interest that includes digital media. The work here is from an ongoing series of abstract digital works that were begun almost by chance exploring what could be done with only a computer at hand while in the architectural studio.
