In 1978-80 while I was completing my MFA in Photography at Cal Arts I had a part time job at the Griffith Observatory. I printed images for exhibitions and publications. During this time I found a stack of reject 4x5" negatives-perhaps copies of recently published NASA or JPL images. I decided to print small portions of these negatives and used them for experiments with hand coloring. I ”enhanced" these images, aware that satellite images are often enhanced (sometimes with fantastic color) to accentuate physical properties. I have used charcoal and pastel dust, metallic paint, spray paint and colored pencil. The resulting work depicts a surface, recognizable perhaps as planetary but not specific. In this series the images may represent "landing strips", scientific illustration, an impossible aerial view or landscape, graffiti, and maybe cave painting. The images are printed on RC paper, a fixative has been applied. This work, though quite different from what I went on to pursue in my art career does foreshadow work I later developed dealing with found photographs or decontextualized images to create fictional archeological sites, sequential photographic narratives. Now many of my past photographs find their way into my abstract paintings.

Throughout most of my visual arts practice I've been concerned with Image and Text experimentation using photography and digital media and have lectured, exhibited and taught in this realm. Painting has been something I've done in the background for the past 25 years and now I find myself primarily working with this medium. Starting with a blank canvas is startlingly different from my approach to creating image/text narratives. Whatever one does with a photographic image, there is a grounding to it and one can build on this representation. I always had an inkling of the style and content I wanted to produce. It is a different challenge with abstract painting to arrive at something which satisfies my visual goals, personal rules and aesthetics -- as unspoken as they may (initially) be. I find myself working through unfamiliar territory ending up with both successes and failures. My abstractions do tend to touch base with landscape, architecture, still life and the idea of home. ----------------------------------------------------- note: I will also be posting photo-based pieces, (diptychs, sequences with text). These pieces were exhibited mostly in the 1980's though early 2000s and many are within editions owned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art among other collections.
