About The Artwork

In the vast expanse of New York City's Grand Central Station, a woman of African descent graces the great hall with her presence. The word "race" deeply troubles me; it is a relic of the 19th century that erroneously categorizes human distinctions based on biology. Its persistent use in our language perpetuates harmful misconceptions about skin color, fueling systemic prejudice that marginalizes non-European descendants. I firmly believe that we must seek new terminology to dismantle these damaging ideas and foster more inclusive conversations. During the creation of this series, titled "Passenger," my lens captured the countenances of countless individuals. Interestingly, I can count on both hands the number of non-European descendants who crossed my path. It's crucial to note that my selection process aimed for randomness, drawing inspiration from Merce Cunningham's use of chance methods in his choreography and techniques from urban archaeology. This photograph and the woman it portrays directly confront my exploration of who has access to spaces like Grand Central Station. What becomes strikingly evident is the overwhelming presence of people of European descent in my frame. It's challenging to ignore the subtle, unspoken segregation that seems to persist in places like Grand Central Station, influencing both psychological and physical access. Even in the absence of overt legal barriers, these spaces often carry unwritten directives that shape opportunities for non-European descendants. This image invites contemplation of the intricate dynamics of access and inclusion that persist in our society. I invite discerning collectors who appreciate the fusion of art and culture. By acquiring this exclusive piece, you invest in an exquisite work of art and contribute to preserving our contemporary era's essence. Each print is titled, dated, numbered, and personally signed on the verso, with a certificate of authenticity, guaranteeing its origin and intrinsic value.

www.MA9.co Fine art photography by Marco Aurelio. ARTIST STATEMENT I photograph the individual on the street to create site-specific visual ethnographies. I also photograph still-life as a way of exploring the beauty of design and form in the natural world. BIO Born and raised at the foot of the South American Andes within a family of generational farmers, I was exposed to native oral traditions, pre-Columbian indigenous art and cosmologies, magical-realism experiences, and the sociopolitical dynamics of the region. I earned a Liberal Arts degree from New York University, which encompassed studies in European history, anthropology, and Western philosophy. Starting as a self-taught photographer, I enhanced my craft by attending courses at The International Center of Photography and The School of Visual Arts in New York City. Following a strong academic curiosity, I ventured into archaeology and anthropology at The City College at CUNY and deepened my understanding of writing, music history, and anthropology at Columbia University. Journeys through photojournalism and portrait photography, combined with interests as varied as ontology, Eastern philosophy, physics, and the metaphysical elements in the fiction of Jorge Luis Borges, continue to shape and inform my fine art photography practice. Today, New York City is both my home and a creative sanctuary.
