About The Artwork

"More Than Valuable" three-part series photography by PhenomenaLewis with model Oshinofa Lakoju photographed in 2021. This project is a short visual story of turning the narrative around about the dollar being held more valuable than a Black person. We've seen this narrative since the time of slavery and even still today. The narrative that compares us against the dollar is saying that we are worthless to it, that money is more important than our own lives, Black lives.  It’s a statement of empowerment, of taking back control of our story and need for change and social justice. Creating this three-part series, I wanted to create a short narrative about currency being worth more than the Black body. The first part of the series, I had my model lay down on the ground. In post-production editing I placed a dollar high above her body at the tip of a triangle because the triangle is the strongest shape/form there is, structurally. In this depiction, the current narrative of reality, us as Black people in this economy aren't worth more than a single dollar. After the unjustifiable killing of a Black person, nothing is ever done, and money blooms from their dead bodies. As the narrative of this photograph progresses, my model begins to rise. This is depicted with her sitting up in the triangle which was previously mentioned as a strong structure. However, the dollar is still above her head. This is to show the progress that the Black community can make, we have each other's backs and were able to rise up. Eventually we can rise and overcome. In the last photograph of this series, my model is seen standing with a torn dollar in hand while standing in the triangle. Eventually, if we continue to have each other's backs we can rise above the power structure that tries to put us down. Sizes in order from left to right: - 20in x 12.29in - 20.78in x 14.84in - 17.69in x 12.64in
