About The Artwork

“Morning Dew (aka Rebirth in the Night Sky)” is a one-of-a-kind silver gelatin print, from my "The Many Rings of Saturn" (series);. MadeWITHOUT A CAMERA AND WITHOUT AN ENLARGER, this mixed process photogram was made with ice/ice concoctions, flowers, sand, glitter, and wax, during my virtual residency for Frames Magazine, in 2022. A photogram is made by placing materials directly on top of a photographic surface and exposing it to light. Followed by processing it in darkroom chemistry. It is unique, and I do NOT EVER offer digital versions of my work, so once a print sells, that's it, it's off the market. I tend to do triple exposures with weird light sources, as my entry into the work of experimental photography was the result of beginning the covid shutdown with an unfinished darkroom (fortunately the wet side was nearly completed in just the nick of time). And it's such a fun process, that I basically get to play in the darkroom in the opposite way I work for film photographs. I have been dedicated to the art of the handmade photograph for over two decades. Pre-covid, I was exclusively a film-photographer, specializing in true infrared film and emotive/spiritual photographs. I am drawn to landscapes of the western United States, so being based on the east coast, I would travel to make my landscape photographs as often as possible. All of my images are essentially subconscious self-portraits or spiritual landscapes that reveal their spiritual nature in the darkroom. (That applies to my cameraless work as well). Falling into experimental photography by accident not only opened my mind to what a (spiritual) landscape photograph could be, but in a very short time, my cameraless work began to transcend the realm of photography, and that started with my very first photograms, made in June 2020. I think of each of my photograms as unique works of art - and many of my processes are inspired by printmaking and sculpture, among other things.

Kimberly Schneider is a Visual Artist, Educator, and Master Printer who has been dedicated to the art of the handmade (darkroom) print for the past 20+ years. Born in Chicago and based in New York, she has a fully functioning darkroom in her apartment, which is not something she takes lightly. Specializing in true infrared film, spiritual landscapes, and experimental photograms, she holds a BFA in photography (and a minor in philosophy) from Colorado State University; While both are deeply intertwined, she identifies as a Printer more than anything else. Kimberly began making photograms with handheld light sources in June 2020, due to having an unfinished darkroom in/taking over her apartment at the time; By sheer luck, or perhaps a matter of fate, the wet side of her current darkroom was essentially complete just 2 weeks prior to the shutdown (the dry side wouldn’t be touched for another 6 months). What began as a way to deal with both isolation and printing withdrawal (after losing her prior darkroom to NYC rent hikes in 2017), quickly led to her metamorphosis as an artist, as well as her current source of income (after losing her prior job to the pandemic in July 2020). Six bodies of work and several awards later, she not only teaches her experimental processes both remotely and in-person but has also been quite fortunate in the print sales department. And she couldn’t be more grateful. Schneider's silver gelatin prints have been exhibited (domestically) at Scott Nichols Gallery, Photo Forward Los Angeles, The Camera Obscura Gallery, SanDiego Art Institute, Lightbox Photographic Gallery, Stonehenge Gallery, Art Intersection, ZIA Gallery, The Photographer's Eye Collective, Photo Méthode Gallery, among other art galleries; She has also shown in Barcelona,Spain, as well as in Ireland (and virtually at The Louvre). She is honored to have work in the Collection of Susan Herzig & Paul Hertzmann, San Francisco, among private collectors, and also does custom commissions (privately) upon request.
