Photography, Polaroid on Canvas
Size: 30 W x 40 H x 0.1 D in
'Mother and Son' is inspired by Tarkovsky Polaroids and Vermeers use of light. My intention in the work is to express the power of love between mother and child. The faces are purposefully hidden using low key lighting, enabling the audience to read further into the work. I am keen to explore the relationship between old and new technologies and the transition between photography and painting. By using Polaroid film and dramatic lighting the photographic image is softened. For me, once digitally enlarged the image quality has a visual effect that falls someway between photography and painting.

I create artworks in my home studio in Norfolk in the United Kingdom. During my first degree in fine art sculpture at Camberwell School of Art, I was tutored by Cornelia Parker. I became interested in photography after recording my installation works. Since then I have undertaken many roles in my career to include artist, lecturer, director, educational advisor and art examiner. After working full time for many years in the education sector, I am now able to concentrate much of my time on my own creativity and aim to present my work to a wider audience. Undertaking a Masters degree in 2006 reinvigorated my art practice and after many years of teaching fine art photography I became interested in the combination of old and new technologies. There have been several strands emerging within my recent work centred on autobiography. Presence, absence, past, present, memory and self are themes of which I feel compelled to explore. By using old and new lens based media from Polaroid to Smartphone and experimenting with techniques such as blurring, overlaying, enlarging, distorting and exploring print surfaces using portraiture as a creative outcome, I am able to reconstruct aspects of my history. I am keen to explore the transition between painting & photography, sometimes using paint and using the camera to ‘paint’ with light. Many of the portraits are featureless and distorted as my intention is making the absence more of a presence. I am fascinated by the work of Vermeer, Tarkovsky and Turner and in particular how the images record light.
