About The Artwork

This piece is a digital image of both a performance and installation exploring the nature of motherhood. Two new mothers sit in a makeshift dining room set outside and struggle to tend to their children while in the elements. Birth is a biological process and an expression of nature that in a contemporary patriarchal society seems out of reach and non-functioning. This is a portrait of artists Jacqueline Bell Johnson (self) and Yoony Takeuchi, holding their infant sons in an installation made by Bell Johnson of wood, paint, palm fronds, and hardware.

Jacqueline Bell Johnson was born and raised in Baltimore, MD and attended a local magnet high school for the arts where she was introduced to classical drawing and painting. She traveled west to continue her studies, majoring in Jewelry/Metal Arts at California College of Arts and Crafts, then earning her MFA from Claremont Graduate University. Upon graduation, she proceeded to organize, curate, and exhibit a string of pop-up shows under the guise LGT! (short for “Let’s Get This!”). Exhibitions of note include the collaborative project Butterfly Effect at Gallery Conceal in Tokyo, Japan, monumental installation Defeated/Deflated at HRLA, public sculpture the 2016 CURRENT:LA Biennial, and several large works for Man Made at Brand Library and Gallery. Mostly known for her installation and sculpture, Bell Johnson’s studio practice also includes digital photography, printmaking, mixed media works on paper, writing, and the occasional collaboration. These methods encourage play and act as springboards to new ideas. Jacqueline Bell Johnson lives and works out of her home studio, in Rancho Cucamonga, California, with her 2 kids, 2 dogs, 1 cat, and 1 hubby. She occasionally writes for the online publication ArtandCakeLA.com .
