About The Artwork

What are memories made of? What do all the objects, the family photos, the images of important places that we keep preciously mean? Are they enough to remember? While searching through drawers filled with all these materials, I realised that four years have passed. Four years. How do we keep in touch? Salut mon papa. This is how each letter that I keep writing to you begins. How do we keep moving forward? Taking the measure of the time that passes and of what is left behind, of what remains to be explored. Keeping track of this journey made of mistakes, new starts, pain and gratitude. A journey tactile like a scratched negative, perfumed like a coffee-based development, visual like the lines of a brush soaked in the developer, colored like the cyanotype blue of a sky. Just like that. And life starts again. Always. Naive Melody is a multi-material and multi-techniques project, made of unsuccessful prints, underexposed negatives, archive images and miscellaneous materials. It was presented in a solo exhibition in a private house in Brussels (December 2018). http://mu-inthecity.com/2018/12/naive-melody-juliette-wayenberg/ https://uncontemporaryart.wordpress.com/2018/12/16/the-matter-of-memories-juliette-wayenberg/

Giving substance to my thoughts and imagination to prevent their disintegration, such was the primary need of my photographs. Reality is multiform, subjective, changing. There is never a single version of the same story. My entire work aims to capture my multi-faceted perceptions. I seek to capture the interactions between the dimensions of realities - visible / invisible, body / places, past / future - and to interpret them in the form of images. My work is mainly influenced by Slow Photography, Post-Photography and by the feminist avant-garde in photography, but also by Surrealism, Expressionism and, in general, by the performing arts. The realisation of my photographs is itself a performance: I prefer ancient techniques that require touching, manipulating, shaping images manually, and large format photographs that involve a physical commitment. My approach is interdisciplinary. Thanks to my background in physical theatre, I often stage self-performances in front of the camera. My experience of iconography allows me to know and study the meanings of each sign represented in two dimensions in the space of the image, and to pay great attention to each gesture. By mixing images, performances, sounds and dynamic installations, I create a global sensory experience in the onlooker.
