Interrogating Identity: ‘Negotiated Identity’ The project ‘Negotiated Identity’ is again looking at the aspect of identity however because many of the projects produced are similar to this idea of identity and i think this element can be experimented with and produced within a range of different formats which is what is intended with this project here. By experimenting with is idea the more negotiating that happens the more surreal and interesting the concept and imagery becomes which is what makes a strong prject. The concept behind this collection of imagery is it first started looking at the idea of the way that artists work can be censored and the way publishers decided to do so and it was this that began the interest within this idea of censoring particular areas of an image. The format that is carried within these photographs is a very traditional and simple portrait style and then by taking these portraits and censoring key elements out of the imagery such as the mouth and eyes. The reason for this is the main element of the concept is to look at taking a portrait and then extracting the identity away from the image which is an interesting element and changes the whole perception of the image which is the intention behind this particular group of photographers. The censoring element of the images is very strong and really changes the visually element to them by taking away the identity, the format has also been taken so even though the images started as a portrait it has changed into something very surreal and this conflict between something very traditional and then changing into something unusual with great impact on to the audience. By creating a change such as this one it will help to draw the audience into the photographs as the images themself have this element of shock because they are almost taking away someones identity away. Also they can be seen as quite surreal because by censoring important elements of the face such as the mouth and eyes it really distorts the image and the person within the photograph. The work of Melinda Gibson is and artist who has trully inflenced the work that has been produced within this project. She produces a collection of photomonatges using a range of different materials such as newspaper and magazines to create this portraits of certain characters that she wants to capture. Each and every charcter has a loss of identity as it is only the outline of the portrait that is used which makes an interesting collection of portraits that obtain no identity which a direct link to the work produced within this project here.
