About The Artwork

The artwork is printed from an original slide film onto Premium Giclee Inkjet digital Lasel fiber based paper, glossy or luster. Everything we manufacture is subject to the forces of nature. Even if nature seems far away when we drive, it relentlessly erodes the surface rough again. The constant wearing down takes place above the road with rain, wind, cold caused by snow or ice, heat from the sun, and debris such as dirt or gravel, as well as below the road with tree roots spreading and water running in streams. How long would it take for a road untended to decay and return to nature and to forget about the road which was there at one time? Despite looking like evocative abstract drawing, the tar calligraphy of Night Language reminds us of the wearing out of a manufactured substance that is part of our daily lives in an industrial world. We manufacture tar to temporally repair the cracks in the roads, an attempt to resist or slow down the natural breakage.

Raised in France, I learnt to notice and appreciate the passage of time on buildings. As a photographer, videographer and sound artist, I explore how capital investments in industries and housing affect people, sometimes compelling workers and residents to move away. Since 2000, my work has explored BC mining, fishing and forestry communities that have been abandoned or on the edge to be erased. As a result, future generations may become unable to experience these endangered ways of living. I have also developed a photographic abstraction style as seen in the works Deterioration, Through, Precaution, and Night Language. In industrial sites, I come across shapes, lines and layers which I study closely, abstracting images from the subject and sometimes creating optical effects.
