About The Artwork

NOVEMBER FLOWERS PHOTOGRAM CUSTOM HAND FINISHED FRAME * INNOVATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY * ONE OF A KIND This photo is one of my favorites for its chaotic freedom and the amount of sentiment behind why I made the image. Each November we (Eugene Pine Native Arts Collective) sponsored and participated in Native American Heritage Month activities. This year we had a show for Eugene and several other Chicago Native American artists. The show opened at Beacon Street Gallery in the Uptown Hull House Center in Uptown (Chicago’s North side). In addition to the visual artists we had community poets, writers, orators, performance artists, dancers and musicians. The students I worked with videotaped the entire opening with three cameras and some mixers. It was so much fun. The flowers used in the photogram were sent for the opening from a local business. It was a really beautiful arrangement and drew lots of compliments. Beacon Street Gallery and Uptown Hull House had in the bowels of its subbasement housed a full thirteen space darkroom. It had been unused for over a decade when I went to work there. With funding from community organizations, local businesses as well as the generosity of Ilford I was able to reopen the darkroom. We taught photography to community youth from various organizations. November Flowers was created in that darkroom. The arrangement dried well and made a great image. I love photograms and constantly look for new things to make a picture out of. I gave the one of the two originals to my parents for their 25th wedding anniversary. The photo hangs in the kitchen near the chair Gail sat in. I have always been honored my work hangs in a place where my parents enjoyed being. The last time I visited Gail at home, ironically she told me how much the photo meant to her. This was the last time I saw her before she passed away. The photo takes on completely new meaning for me. I am unable to recreate these images. The photos are the originals and limited to one THE FRAME The Print comes framed in an original 11 x 14 custom faux finished frame teal and emerald with gold leaf. The frames are mixed media Ink, acrylic and gold leaf. Individually unique each frame is sealed with teak oil and buffed to a high gloss finish. I’ve selected frames to fit the photo placed in them. SET OF SIX ONE OF A KIND LIMITED EDITION I had hoped to sell these as a set three Composite Photos and Three Photograms. However they can be bought individually.

Paul Shefferly M.F.A. IT’S JUST DAMN FUN I have fun, making art has always been fun for me. If it’s working in the darkroom, shooting or finishing frames I have a lot of fun. I don’t really consider myself an artist I view myself as a creative problem solver. I see challenges everywhere I go and think to myself how I would change it. I took a lighting class in graduate school and have been in love with light ever since. Light is all around us all the time, with the exception of a light proof room or box and how it plays with us intrigues me. I will sit in one location for hours watching the light change the environment around me. I will figure out a way to capture what I want you to see about the light. I love to see what other people create. When the mid is clear of our countless obstructions we can really see the splendor of the world around us. It’s a gift, watch a child intrigued with a plain brown card board box, they are living the gift. My background is so incredibly diverse I am content doing just about anything, but my passions are photography, photo editing, refinishing frames and serial killers. I was trained as a Psychological Profiler back in the 1980’s when it was considered “Voodoo” and witchcraft police work. Not the prominence it has today. One of my first profiles got me a suspect right off the bat, his family hired an attorney who told the department I was crazy and if I didn’t back off they would take legal action. The suspect moved on to another school and unfortunately was successful at hurting someone. Oh well. I wrote a final in art history profiling the artist using his work as a crime scene. Again, I’m crazy. The world is too caught up in convention and so afraid to try on those new shoes.
