About The Artwork

This photograph was taken in Salvador, Bahia - Brazil. Bahia was the first state and capital of Brazil since portuguese colonizers arrived, and marked by Catholic influence, was called Bahia de Todos os Santos (Bahia of all saints). With the arrival of African slaved people, bringing culture and diverse religion, Bahia as we know now was taking shape. Called "Black Rome" Salvador is the epicentre of black culture in Brazil with its colors, food, and religion. Candomblé and Umbanda are some of the most popular religions in Brazil, brought by african people, and gaining influence of Catholicism in order to keep up with their beliefs and not be caught by the sistem, because other cults beside catholic were prohibited. The baianas, pictured in the image, are the backbone of Bahia, of Brazil, and afro religions. This picrure is abouth the strenght of Brazilian culture, faith, black women. Available in original photo and framing (90x60 cm, in a black wood frame), and in prints.
