About The Artwork

Old Woman with Narcissus My work is about Life and Death. What is always behind the image is a thought. Thoughts behind my photographs are my fascinations, fears and concerns related to existence and its ending. I use photography to record these. I am interested in Memento mori theme in visual art. Thinking of Time and its destructive powers is what drives my practice and shapes my ideas. I explore the notions of “never”, “forever” and “always”. TECHNIQUE: The work was shot on a medium format film camera Mamiya RZ67 using Fujifilm 400h Pro 120 medium format negatives. The scanned negative was transformed into a digital image and printed on giclée printer using Hahnemühle Pearl in one of the very best London printing houses. PAPER: Hahnemühle Pearl; Weights 285 (GSM); Finish: Pearl/satin; Texture: Fine orange peel texture. Hahnemüle Pearl has a smooth orange peel texture and a bright neutral white base. It creates really natural black and white images and offers vibrant colour reproduction and great detail too. The paper is resin coated with a fibrous feel. The satin finish of the resin coating gives depth to the image which combined with the texture and vibrant colour reproduction give the image the feel of an oil painting. The paper is truly beautiful and was chosen by me after many print tests using various papers. It stands for fantastic printing results suitable for my work and it’s aesthetic. PRINT: The print measurement is 75.6cm x 62cm (29.8 inch x 24.4 inch) and includes a 2.5cm white boarder (0.98 inch). If the print is framed as per recommendation below then it will result with a 4.2cm white frame and a 2cm visible white border around the image (1.65 inch frame and 0.79 inch visible border). The print will be signed by me in a downright corner with my name, surname, year of the shoot/year of the print and the edition number (for example “2/21”) with a dark color marker on the image itself. This writing and a signature will not be easy to see either too noticeable as will be in a very right corner of the image with a dark marker on a darker part of the image- grass part. EDITION: The work will be reproduced with a maximum number of 21 copies while the size of the prints within the final 21 copies may vary. AWARDS: Piotr Karpinski’s work has been awarded by The British Journal of Photography with The Breakthrough Award 2016 in a Single Image Graduate Category. His work was published in “The Catlin Guide 2015|New Artists in the UK”- annually printed book, an introduction to the 40 most promising new graduate artists in the United Kingdom. Piotr’s work has been featured in 2 books by The Magenta Foundation “Flash Forward 2017 Emerging Photographers from Canada, the United Kingdom & the United States” as well as 2016 edition. His work has been published in The Photography Annual 2015 by The Creative Review Magazine– a publication showcasing the best in commercial photography and the finest photographers’ personal project. Piotr’s images have been showed in The Saatchi Gallery as part of the Saatchi Screen project (London 2019) and exhibited at Magnum Photos 70 with David Hurn & Martin Parr- Magnum Swap Shop by Magnum Photos (London 2017); International Print Exhibition 159 by The Royal Photographic Society (The Royal Albert Hall and UK-Ireland 2016-2017 tour) as well as International Print Exhibition 158 edition. His work has been exhibited in Getty Images Gallery as part of The Renaissance Photography Prize 2017 (London) as well as The Renaissance Photography Prize 2016 when shortlisted as a finalist- Getty Images Gallery. The Winner of Portrait of Britain 2018 following the nationwide group exhibition by The British Journal of Photography and the Portrait of Britain 2018 book feature. This particular image was displayed in Getty Images Gallery as part of The Renaissance Photography Prize 2017 (London) and International Print Exhibition 158 by The Royal Photographic Society (The Royal Albert Hall and UK-Ireland 2015-2016 tour) FRAME OPTION: The work is on sale both unframed and framed. The current offer is set as unframed as standard. If you would like the work framed then get in touch to make an additional arrangement. This will be an additional $500 if sold via Saatchi Art, which is my actual cost of framing, mounting, crate and commission percentage for Saatchi Art. I would need 10 extra working days to fix framing and crate for your piece. Just write me a message if you prefer to have your artwork framed. I suggest my very favorite style which suits my work perfectly in my opinion: “Box frame” which adds a bit of depth, shadow and presence to your artwork. This deeper frame creates a space between the glass and the print for a contemporary feel. My top recommended choice is white wooden moulding which looks simple, firm and modern. The framed piece has a strong contemporary vibe. The choice of frame measures 4.2cm wide x 4.2cm thick (1.65 inch x 1.65 inch) with a satin white finish which will give you a firm and modern look thanks to the “Box frame” type I recommend. It will result in the final framed measurement of 83cm x 69.4cm (32.7inch x 27.3inch) compared to the unframed print measuring 75.6cm x 62cm (29.8 inch x 24.4 inch). The print would be mounted on 3mm white Foamex board before framing. See additional pictures for the work and an example of this framing in black looking at pictures of artwork “Woman in the Church No.1” at my Saatchi Art profile or write me for a specific frame pictures/link to see it at my framer’s.

My work is about Life and Death. I am fascinated by both. What is always behind the image is a thought. Thoughts behind my photographs are my fascinations, fears and concerns related to the existence and its ending. I use photography to record these. I tell stories and tend to construct a narration to be more like a poem rather than a novel- enigmatic yet conveying a strong message. I think of my work as a fiction even I mix it with reality sometimes. I take most of my inspirations from cinematography and old masters’ paintings. I am interested in Memento mori theme in visual art. Thinking of time and its destructive powers is what drives my practice and shapes my ideas. I explore the notions of “never”, “forever” and “always”. I work on a medium format film camera.
