The pictures taken over the years couldn’t just be set aside, put in a box and forgotten. They seemed to call, for some kind of action, some kind of doing, at least in order to let go. And so began my most primitive experiments with form. How could I transform these images from just a nostalgic rendition, into an immediate call for action. Surely the pain I felt, was at some level universal too. Within the onslaught of rampant ‘development’ , that I now saw even on new turf, (yes, one thinks one is moving forward but time actually is circular) and this made it more acute somehow, surely there must be some way, to keep some of the authentic bearings of a space. To still be able to see familiar faces… how could one halt the movement of those who continually leave or possibly just become invisible as they move from the ground into the sky. And how could I convey all of these things, without saying anything at all. For in this process of experiencing loss, a deep vulnerability of being voiceless too, unable to affect any change at all, unable to preserve, to save, to hold on was also acutely revealed. Here I was, with my almost questionable nostalgia, and here was also the most coveted piece of real estate on its march to elite gentrification. What does one do? Possibly the only thing one can.
