About The Artwork

All components of the artwork were taken or created by the author Museum edition (limited to 7) - Total size: 111.8 x 167.7 cm - 44 x 66" - Image size: 100 x 150 cm - 39.4 x 59.1" - White margin size: 5.8 x 8.85 cm - 2.3 x 3.5" Artwork description: The species of the animal shown in the artwork is the quokka. It is an endemic animal that lives on the beautiful “Rottnest Island” (Australia), which received that name because when it was discovered by Dutch sailors it was thought to be infested by rodents of great size. In reality the quokka is more related to a kangaroo than to a rat, they are marsupials, not rodents, and they are very friendly creatures. This piece represents a situation that would quite certainly give the woman who has just entered the scene a good fright. Notice the Fibonacci arrangement of the elements, starting from the woman leg, the quokka and then the leaves in the steps, followed by the leaves on the floor, the quokka inside the bronze container and the light shapes on the right wall. In fact, I could not contain myself and I have included the beginning of the Fibonacci spiral, replacing the picture on the top of the steps, to help the viewer to find it. Significance of the artwork: This artwork teaches us how most of our fears live just in our minds. When the danger behind something is understood, it can become enjoyable. Also, be prepared: danger may appear just around the corner… About the media: About the brand of the paper, I use Canson because they provide outstanding quality paper. They have been in the market producing paper for artists for over 400 years. About the particular model of paper, I have selected Canson Infinity Platine Fibre Rag 100% cotton (Palace Edition) and Baryta Photographique 100% alpha cellulose (rest of editions), two Fine Art satin papers. These models of papers provide a photorealistic look, which turns imagination into a real situation, confusing the viewer. On the other hand, I have also printed this artwork using Canson Infinity Edition Etching Rag (matte Fine Art paper, 100% cotton) and the result, less realistic and more pictorial, is also very pleasing. If you prefer your artwork printed in Edition Etching Rag just send me a quick email to let me know or contact Saatchi. This artwork belongs to Visions of Another Continent, whose description is: When someone leaves his home country for a long period, his natal roots weaken and new ones start to grow. After returning to his place of origin, he will observe it in a different way, as his references will have changed. Ideally, he will want to keep what he most likes of both parts. This artistic series shows the spontaneous visions of a past period in my life, my stay in Australia for 5 years, mixed with scenes of my current daily life. In most cases these visions include two elements: the Australian natural heritage, the most astonishing part of the country for me, with the (European) cultural heritage, less common in that part of the Hemisphere. The first of the elements, nature, reminds us where we are coming from. The second one, culture, how far we can go. With this series I have wanted to experience how both worlds could interact if they were merged. That is an impossible desire to satisfy, but at least I can now visually enjoy it.

I was born in Barcelona (Spain) in 1977. Shortly after I moved to Madrid and then to Cáceres, a small but charming town, as evidence the fact that it is a World Heritage Site by Unesco. I remember my childhood climbing to every place I could, continuously running, playing and fighting with my siblings, visiting the countryside every weekend, reading all I could (I used to devour Roald Dahl’s books), spending time with friends in the old town of Cáceres and travelling around Europe with my family in summer. I discovered my passion for photography at the age of 13. Something great happened before buying my camera: I went to the shop so many times to ask doubts that finally the bookseller gave me a photography book, which I instantly memorize, what helped me to become a better photographer from the beginning and to boost my motivation. At the age of 15 I had to move to Madrid. In that complex period of transition, at least I had my camera to keep creating and investigating new techniques. Soon I became interested in multiple exposures and zoom burst, techniques that helped me to win my first photography competitions, already in college time. In that same period, I bought a medium format camera. This type of camera has a higher film size than a full frame camera. Despite its weight, it helped to further increase my passion for photography, not only for its impressive image quality but for its absence of automatisms, what made the shooting a more premeditated, elaborated and artisanal act. At the end of my university studies I passed a test to be able to enrol in a studio photography course. Working in a studio, with just the dimly modelling lights of the flashes, it turns out and continues to be a fascinating experience to me. For the training, we used large format cameras, which are cameras with a very big film size, able to produce breathtaking quality. Finally, I enrolled in a digital photography retouching course, which was exactly what I needed to create my artistic compositions. All this resulted in new sources of motivation for my photography. When I finished my degree, I traveled to England for a year trying to leave behind my academic studies, but finally I had to find a job as an engineer. After more than a decade working and living in different cities and countries, I decided to return to my almost natal Cáceres, to focus my activity on artistic photography.
