About The Artwork

My photo-based practice stems from that personal experience, which I have moved or transferred among many different types of places and spaces since my childhood. In other words, I moved from a small town to Beijing, then I moved to Wisconsin, Texas, and finally NYC in the order. Those sudden changes of places prompt me to create a balanced space of both comforts and feelings of security in photographs. Inspiring by the French concept "flaneur" and confused temporal and spatial relationships, I am currently creating the East-West joint photographic space for young immigrants included me after taking education in the States. It evokes the common practice forty years ago of pasting newspapers on the walls of one’s home, a handy and affordable solution for wallpaper in China. The newspapers are black/dark colors because I soaked in traditional Chinese watercolor ink before. The newspapers are yellow because I soaked in photographic developer before. Then, I dug out into Portraits, we are taken the visa headshot photos before we came here for education. I explored the space by researching both classical Chinese studio backdrop photography and U.S. visa photography. The New York Times routinely reported beautiful American houses on its Chinese language website. In the “portrait space”, I have applied those fragments and slices of houses pictures in my fake backdrop scene to create the space.
