Driving the road to Pemberton Meadows in early spring, I came upon a stand of quaking aspen. It was not the details that caught my attention, but rather the constrast of colour. I chose to make this photograph with intention camera movement, in order to use the contrasting colours as paint on my canvas. Quaking aspen are also known as quakies, trembling aspen, American aspen, mountain aspen, golden aspen, white poplar, and popple. In Canada, quaking aspen are used in the production of pulp paper products. To quote American Environmentalist, John Muir (1838-1914): "Any fool can destroy trees. They cannot run away; and if they could, they would still be destroyed - chased and hunted down as long as fun or a dollar could be got out of their bark hides, branching horns, or magnificent bole backbones." PEMBERTON POPPLES is a reminder to me of the role that quaking aspens play in our world, and becomes, for me, a visual call to reduce my paper consumption and consider digital solutions, whenever possible. ______________________________________________ EXCLUSIVE COLLECTOR CONTENT Receive exclusive collector content from JL Robertson and stay up-to-date on new photographic projects, new releases including pre-release privileges for new limited edition prints, exclusive events and more! B: 1973, Ontario, Canada. I am a visual artist working primarily in contemporary abstract art and nature photography. I have been seeing the world through a lens for over 40 years. Summers filled with camping and canoeing, I quickly fell in love with campfire smoke rising over a misty lake, dew-kissed spider webs and the night sky mirrored in a still lake. It was here that I learned to see - to be observant - to notice details, patterns and textures. It was here that I learned to listen - for a splash, a beaver tail slap, the hoot of an owl. It was here that I learned to wait patiently - for a loon to surface or for a wolf to howl. Light, time, motion, textures and shadows are my raw materials. I enjoy capturing details that often go overlooked in our busyness, calling attention to them through photography. I like to push the boundaries of what I can see with my eyes. I want to create images that speak to my soul. And should they bring you to a place of even momentary contemplation, they will have found their wings and been given flight. I invite you to visit my website to learn more about my artistic inspiration and process.
