ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Fine Art print on Baryta paper with a semi matte finish. Each print is signed and numbered, accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. Palm Leaf IMAGOgram and Photogram, 2016 Archival Fine Art Print 62 x 110 cm (Original Size) – Edition of 12 + 2 AP 40 x 70 cm – Edition of 18 + 2 AP From the series BOTANY, 2015 – 2017: An analogue photography series of botanical themes. Each original is an analogue life-size still life created with the unique IMAGO Camera, based in Berlin, photographed on direct-positive paper and therefore unique. In the IMAGO photography technique, no digital editing takes place. This applies to the originals as well as the art prints. Nature and botany are essential categories in the history of photography. The first photographs werde made because people wanted to record and catalog the status of botanical elements. Flowers have always been a symbol of endless beauty, for their nature-given elegance and texture. Susanna Kraus became known for her new discoveries in analogue photography. Her aesthetics and visual language are characterised by the fact that she works exclusively in black and white and unusual large formats. Together with the Viennese photographer Annegret Kohlmayer, theys have approached the subject of 'still life' and stripped flowers and plants of their natural surroundings and colours, turning them into artificial objects full of intensity and gloom. Artists: Susanna Kraus, Annegret Kohlmayer

Susanna Kraus, born in Munich. Actress, artist, photographer and visionary mind behind the IMAGO Camera. The IMAGO Camera is a 7 x 3 metre walk-in large-format camera, the only one of its kind in the world. It was developed in the 1970s by physicist Werner Kraus and is now located in Susanna Kraus' art space in Berlin Kreuzberg. With the help of the IMAGO Camera, she creates life-size portraits and still lifes, each developed on direct positive paper and therefore unique. Trained as an actress at the Otto Falkenberg Acting School in Munich in the early 1980s, Susanna Kraus shifted her focus to photography from 2005 onwards. Not least due to the rediscovery of the IMAGO Camera developed in the 1970s, which Florian Hufnagl, head of the New Collection at the Pinakothek der Moderne, kept in his collection. He also supported Susanna Kraus in reactivating this unique photographic medium of self-portrayal. Susanna Kraus organised several exhibitions there. Self-taught, she explored the intricacies of the special photographic processes of the IMAGO Camera and thus combines performing art, scenography and directing with analogue photographic imaging using her 25 years of stage experience. Susanna Kraus' work with the IMAGO Camera covers a wide range of topics. A recurring theme is the depiction of various social groups and subcultures. To this day, she creates portraits and still lifes with the IMAGO Camera and exhibits them nationally and internationally. Susanna Kraus lives and works in Berlin.
