About The Artwork

"Death’s Perceptions” illustrates that even in death we still have our perceptions. This archival print has been mounted and matted to archival museum rag board to a size of 22” x 28”. This image is part of Oscar Lozoya's "La Muerte" series are based on Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), an important and festive Mexican holiday celebrated since the time of the Aztecs. This festival is traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd along with the Catholic All Saints Day and All Souls Day. The celebration honors the dead, but also mocks death and has fun with it, all the while aware that death in folklore is not the same as death in reality. Oscar Lozoya has exhibited his "La Muerte" series in galleries and museums around the world, every year since 1994. This series has grown to become his largest and most recognized series of black and white photographic art.

Oscar Lozoya's favorite pastime as a child was drawing and painting. In his early teens he took up music and for many years made his living as a professional musician. Oscar discovered photography and soon knew it was what he wanted to do. Oscar opened Lozoya Studios in his old South Broadway neighborhood in Albuquerque, New Mexico shooting commercial photography specializing in people: Album covers, posters, press kits, ads, magazines spreads, etc. He found that much of the same technique and models used in Commercial Photography could also be used in Fine Art Photography. Oscar began entering print competition in The Professional Photographers of America (PPA) in 1996 and has had 46 prints accepted into the National Loan Collection solely from the photographic open division. In 1999 he received The Master of Photography degree on print merits only, that same year he received the Photographic Craftsman degree on speaking merits only. Oscar Lozoya was among the first photographers to receive the Excellence in Imaging Award from the PPA which requires a minimum of 13 national loan prints to qualify. Oscar was one of less than 30 photographers worldwide, to receive the newly created Plus XIII Bar and has since received his second Plus XIII Bar. The Professional Photographers of America has also selected Lozoya's images for a full page National Ad Campaign. Oscar Lozoya has received the prestigous National Award for service to the Professional Photographers Association of New Mexico, of which he is a past president. Several of the largest equipment and materials manufactures in the photography industry have also used his images to promote their products. Oscar Lozoya has traveled extensively around the United States and Latin Countries doing lectures and seminars in both English and Spanish.
