VIEW IN MY ROOM

Abandoned buildings can be time capsules offering glimpses of history, artifacts, and insights into private worlds. There are often gorgeous textures, colours, shapes, and dramatic lighting. My hope is that viewers are drawn in by the image, to wonder about the story behind it, and think about the history of industry in our culture. This pink room was part of a beautiful TB sanitarium located near one of the biggest steel mills in the world. Cramped living quarters, poverty, and pollution led to the highest rate of Tuberculosis per capita in this city. The sanitarium was build by a doctor famous for treating TB. He spent years designing the building, raising funds, locating the site on a hill surrounded by trees, and having it built. The sanitarium was beautiful, with a Spanish tiled roof, a spiral staircase, and double french doors opening onto large balconies where patients could be wheeled out in their beds for fresh air and sunshine. Several years after the sanitarium was built, a compound called streptomycin was found to cure TB. The sanitarium was no longer needed. The building became a residential school for children with conditions not easily managed at home at that time. The large, open balconies were secured with metal cage-like structures. Nurses' offices were located in the basement. It was eventually abandoned. It was very well built and in good condition after years of neglect. Photography has been a passion of mine since age 7 when a neighbour gave me an old Brownie pinhole camera. I continue to love the magic and beauty of the world seen through a lens. I aim to capture the atmosphere, feelings, and beauty of a place in a way that is both realistic and personal – being a true record of the place yet full of feeling and atmosphere.

Canada
Valerie was raised in Vancouver, lived many years in Toronto, and currently resides in Victoria, BC. She loves high heels and hiking boots, the culture in large cities and the spiritual connection of the natural world. Valerie is drawn to photograph urban street scenes, abandoned buildings and vehicles, and our beautiful natural world. How we balance the two dichotomies (or not) is her focus -- how can we live in a rewarding way that also respects and preserves our disappearing natural world.
