The image was taken during a trip to South Africa in 2004 at a hotel in Cape Town. Having taken photographs from an early age, I was always drawn to clean lines and graphic shapes. I would start with composing an image without the actual subject present so I could achieve a beautiful composition. Only then would I add my subject, be it a person, a car or something else, to the photograph before exposing the film. Pool Shadow was shot on a classic Hasselblad 503 using Kodak Portra NC, my negative film of choice for many years. The image has been shown in multiple exhibitions in Europe and the US and remains one of my personal favorites to this day. The photograph has sold to a number of collectors for its calming, relaxing effect. One was shipped to an American client's holiday home in Mexico, one to a young collector in London and another to an artist couple in Berlin earlier this year. The image is printed onto coated aluminum and has a recessed aluminum shadow frame.
