About The Artwork
One of the most ubiquitous of garden weeds, the common poppy, papaver somniferum, self-sows extravagantly. I love the wide range of variation in both the colour of the petals, and the number of holes in the pepper-pot seed pod vary between five and twelve -- or at least that is the range I have seen. In this image, the moments before and after blooming appear side by side: a bud about to open and an unripe seedpod, one petal still hanging on.
