Pygmalion was the central character in Orvid's narrative poem "Metamorphoses". Pygmalion carved a woman out of ivory, who he fell in love with. He asked Aphrodite to grant him a wish and bring her to life - which she did. The work is abstract, but the explosion of colour is to inspire hope and optimism that wishes sometimes come true.

Kristin Hatland is an exhibiting artist with a Bachelor of Applied Arts Visual. A component of her vision and motiviation is informed by her study of logic (cause and effect) while simultaneously applying a normative ethic. The blending of the two philosophical theories provides artistic tension, blurring idealistic expression, driving her fascination with abstract art. An award winning artist, she has exhibited at the Shutter Room in Whangarei as part of the group exhibition Metapherein, was part of the selection for The Exposure Award launched by the Louvre in Paris, and the bastille from her Plato’s Cave series was amongst the finalists and winners included in a tour of New Zealand’s museums and art galleries coordinated by the Wallace Arts Trust. Her artworks are held in collections in New Zealand and overseas
