About The Artwork

Ragna Rök and James the Creature at the Smoking Area of a Bar in Reykjavik is a part of F*CK GENDER – portrait photography series that follows a group of drag artists from Iceland exploring performative nature of gender. Through witnessing playful ways of drag performers destroying, mocking or adding new layers of gender identity, each photograph is an attempt to catch a glimpse of human being beyond the limits of heteronormativity and gender binarism. “When I started the project, I wasn’t familiar with this form of art. I have never been to a drag show before. So, I expected to take pictures of all that glitter and glamour - perfect make up, colourful wigs, wild costumes. Well, no wonder I found all that, but I found so much more. My aim was to document drag as a critique of the artificial nature of gender. But instead of that I became more and more interested with the people themselves. I realized that gender is not important, because of the simple fact that there is no such thing as gender." While other photographers have focused on the interactions between the artists and the audience, I have been more interested in telling the story of the relationship between the performers and their art. In the light of assimilation of drag by popular culture in recent years, I wanted to explore the roots of this art form. My aim was to witness drag performance on a small stage in a dark bar, document behind the scenes of drag shows and everyday life of drag artists. I enjoyed the limitations this setting prescribed – taking photos in a dark environment, illuminating just most important part of the frame, focusing on details. I love the rough grain on those photos emphasize that those are the moments showing drag art in it's purest form. To accentuate the struggle between light and darkness in the photography I choose an amazing Hahnemühle Fine Art Print, Photo Rag 308 g/m2 paper which gives to the photography almost watercolor painting look. It is made of 100% cotton and has a matte surface. Every print of limited edition have it's own unique number (1 to 10) and has been signed by the photographer. Keep in mind that the dimensions of the print will be 46x66 cm, as it has 3 cm of white edge from all sides. IMPORTANT: 50% of income from sold artworks will be dedicated to fund an amazing new intersectional zine on counter-cultures #estranged. More information about the project on www.estrangedmag.com

For more than 15 years, Kaspars Bekeris has been covering the news as a TV reporter, writer, and photographer for different media. "Just a little less than three years ago, I changed my life completely. I quit my job in the field of oversaturated media, publicity and advertising industry and moved to my grandparents' house in the middle of a forgotten forest where I used to spend most of my summers in childhood. That is one of those places which for some odd reasons has been left untouched by the civilisation, one hour walk from the closest village. For the next half of year, I experience nature's full cycle of rebirth into a short but vibrant Latvian summer and going back to silent hibernation. All this time I documented my everyday life with my old camera. However, for the first time over a decade I have used this light sensitive device not just as a tool to accompany my news stories with photographic evidence. Camera in my hands became this magical storytelling instrument by itself. The photographs I took were the only medium and a mean to tell the story of my life at that particular time. There was no need for additional words, captions, or explanations. I realised that it takes time to tell a good story. Since my pilgrimage to my childhoods home, I completely changed my practice of storytelling. As I am coming from a journalistic background, I am still driven by a political dimension of a story. I want to see bits of personal history embedded into a broader picture of society and world. But I could no longer tolerate the fast pace of modern media — there was never enough time to understand people I meet fully, never enough time to get to the core of the issue. I think that in this disruptive, clickbait driven, infotainment contaminated and sensationalist media landscape there is a persistent need for an alternative – honest, thought-provoking and respectful dialog with the audience. It took more than one and a half year to work on my latest portrait photography project F*CK GENDER that follows a group of drag artists from Iceland exploring the performative nature of gender. Through witnessing playful ways of drag performers destroying, mocking or adding new layers of gender identity, each photograph is an attempt to catch a glimpse of the human being beyond the limits of heteronormativity and gender binarism.
