About the Artist

N A Vague

Germany

N. A. Vague is interested in the promise of a more desirable version of life as it appears in consumer culture and contemporary spirituality. Her practice focuses in particular on the visual and verbal modes of expression through which this promise takes shape.
With a background in advertising and media, Vague works through quotation, borrowing the language of the systems she examines rather than judging them from a distance. Their seductive logic remains active, while subtle wit serves as her response to the ambiguity of not standing entirely outside them.
Working across conceptual photography, text-based painting and other mediums, Vague translates familiar motifs into reduced, boldly colored compositions that invite gentle shifts in perception.

Vague (born in Berlin, Germany) studied marketing communications and worked across advertising and the media industry before dedicating herself to her artistic practice. Her work has been repeatedly shortlisted for the Sony World Photography Awards and was nominated for the Merck-Preis. She participated in The Royal Photographic Society's International Photography Exhibition and contributed to an interactive installation at Pavillon 333 of the Pinakothek der Moderne. Her work is held in private collections in Germany and the United States. Vague lives in Munich, Germany.
