Ships in a Crate
A 21st century artist, painting the scourging of Christ (who is wearing a crown of thorns), suddenly collapses in front of his work, which has become no longer his work, but a work of acheiropoieta--not made by human hands. Indeed, the artist's hands now show the holy signs of stigmata, the wounds and blood of Christ being crucified. His hand rises up to show us the real work at hand, that of stigmata acheiropoieta. This moment caught by the camera's eye has also created an icon within an icon that is acheiropoieta-- not made by human hands. It is not what is commonly considered a "supernatural" moment, but a moment of complete nature, in that nature is God-created and only appears to be "supernatural" because only the obvious is apparent to us. The power that is normally hidden from our ordinary perceptions is suddenly manifest and real. The artist as a creator is not only a created being himself, but has now had an experience of the power inherent in the religious icon thrust upon his physical being. The hand of stigmata both warns us away, and shows us the proof of the artist's link to divine force. The espresso cup resting on the easel was an ordinary pleasure, and ties us to the world outside, while also bridging the world inside. The artist is about to collapse, as did Saul of Tarsus before he fell from his horse, bathed in divine presence, and became St. Paul. The artist has transcended his own vision and his own earth-bound work through directly experiencing that which he intends for the viewers of his work to feel. But for the person whose work is taken from him through something sacred that the work unleashes within itself, the experience is totally consuming. The artist is consumed by the experience of Christ, by the human body defiled and then not only restored but rendered into a corpus acheiropoieta.
