Robert Doisneau was a French photographer who, along with Henri Cartier-Bresson, was a pioneer of photojournalism. He is renowned for his 1950 image Le baiser de l'hôtel de ville (Kiss by the Town Hall), a photograph of a couple kissing in the busy streets of Paris, and so many more classics of the field including the image of Picasso with the croissants in front of him at a table wearing the sailor shirt. Doisneau was appointed a Chevalier (Knight) of the Legion of Honour in 1984. The day I visited him for the photos, Doisneau was going through emotional pain for his wife's condition who was gravely ill. We finally started to make the photos upon Doisneau's return from his wife's hospital, and I was appreciative of the generosity of spirit and professional focus and total cooperation that he showed to my project.
