ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Self-portrait #28 Taken in Berlin, this is Cody's fifth series within the "Self Portrait" collection - an ongoing photography project that Cody has started since 2007 while he’s dancing around the world with Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake to capture his moments in time as inspired by places where his professional dance career has taken him to. As soon as Cody enters the Holocaust Memorial, he feels a strong sense of isolation, hopelessness, and feels responsible to create an active visual dialogue with the environment. "This intense feeling of loss has inspire me to take a Site-Specific approach to respond with my movements and breathing- I want to contribute my energy and warmth to the space, while creating a connection between the past and the present. This participation within the visual composition is a metaphor, of how us as human is constantly evolving, along the timeline of difficult times, stability, prosperity, with the hope of reaching the ultimate definition for humanity." Choreograph & Photo by: Cody Choi | Art Direction: Ada Ooi Cody's Moving Group

Cody Choi is a contemporary photographer and choreographer known for his stunning figurative portraits of dancers. Born in Hong Kong and a dancer himself, Cody captures the dynamism and passion of his subjects with an expert eye. Cody’s work is funded by the Arts Council England, as well as commissioned by the Royal Opera House, Greenwich Dance London and exhibited globally. FROM DANCER / CHOREOGRAPHER TO PHOTOGRAPHER Cody graduated in Modern Dance in 2000 from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where he received the Jackie Chan Scholarship twice. Cody was then awarded a full scholarship to join the Transitions Dance Company at Laban in London. He has a breadth of international performing experience, including 3 international touring seasons with Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake as well as the English National Opera and the Royal National Theatre. As an experienced professional choreographer whose work have been performed in the Linbury Theatre at the Royal Opera House, The Place, Adidas, LG, BBC, World Dance Alliance, Greenwich Dance in London and other major venues across Europe and Asia. CODY CHOI’S STYLE AND APPROACH Cody’s breathtaking dance portraits create a visceral sensation of flight and thrill. Observers are pinned to the spot as they anticipate the dancers’ next move. His approach isn’t simply to follow their movement though, but to move and ‘breath with them’. As well as the beautiful shapes of their bodies, Cody pays close attention to the dance of their clothes, hair and expressions for an all-engulfing action shot. EXHIBITIONS AND COLLECTIONS Cody’s extensive experience as a dancer is equal to his acclaim as a modern photographer. He has shot for Samsung TV, Ben Sherman, Affordable Art Fair in Hong Kong, Singapore and London, Taipei 101, Accessible Art Fair in Brussels Casa Monaco with Imitate Modern and Saatchi Art in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, London and Bristol. He has also been featured in London TV, Samsung TV, Time Out, Aesthetica Magazine, Metro Newspaper, The Evening Standard, and more.
