"Series from the color dark room I-X" is a series of color photograms (or rayograms) made continuously since 2013. In the dark room, the three color filters, cyan, magenta and yellow, are successively developed on photosensitive paper (only one color per sheet). The papers are then cut into simple geometric shapes and in turn placed on a blank photo paper. A new exposure takes place. The light passes through the cut papers, the colors obtained on the new paper are inversions of the first three while the background is entirely black, burned by the light. The compositions recall those of the constructivists and their arrangements of geometric forms, more particularly those of El Lissitzky who himself experimented a lot with the photogram. This look towards a history of forms is very present in Juliana Borinski's work, especially towards minimalism and constructivism. She shares with these artists a constant interest in experimentation and exploration of the possibilities of materials. Series from the color dark room I-X, like many of her works, is the result of many unsuccessful attempts. In the dark room, by deviating from the usual development protocol, the artist loses control and at the end of the process can only judge positively or negatively the result.
