Giclyee print on high gloss film negative. From a series that came about unintentionally. When admitted to hospital for serious illness, at times while conscious I tried to distract myself from the extreme discomfort and pain by taking photos of whatever limited view of the world around me I had with my phone camera, using the hipstamatic app. I could not have held my 'proper camera' at the time, or even focussed well enough to hold a pen or pencil to draw. At the time, I had no idea what the images I was taking were actually like. It was only some time after returning home and somewhat recovering that I actually looked at the photos I'd taken whilst in hospital and discovered that they seemed to me to convey a sense of the isolation and fear of being institutionalised and so, there may be some value in creating something form them. As it turned out, I ended up with a photo-essay of 111 images from this experience. As there are not many opportunities to show such a long photo-essay, I then edited the selected images further to create triptychs or - 'short stories' - short impressions of the experience of institutionalisation. All images used in these works have been further edited and manipulated to add to the tone and composition initially captured using hipstamatic app on iphone.

Australia
I am an artist living in Melbourne, Australia. Earlier phases of my life have included an international career exhibiting artistic ceramics, then years spent as a social worker and academic. In more recent years I have returned to the creation of visual art. The process of my art usually begins with in fact "seeing a feeling" in my mind. Then I search for the most appropriate techniques and materials with which to express that vision.
