About The Artwork

SILENT RED Since the early 16th century up to now the visual representation of landscapes, real or imaginary, play an important role in the occidental arts. While looking at paintings or photographs I realized that most of them show scenery as a whole, from a general point of view. But during my many hikes in the Alps I got fascinated with details of the landscapes before me, with strange sculptures formed by melting snow, long blue shadows cast by mountains on late afternoons, with deep snow disguising and softening the contours, with clouds clued to rock faces after a storm, the interaction of grassy patches with rocks, with the small paths imprinted by cattle during their grazing time in summer, with fog enveloping a slope, with rain smoothening and blurring the sharp outlines or early snow highlighting every detail of a forest. So I asked myself: If shown in detail, does landscape get another significance? Does their relation to their surrounding change? If one cuts out a detail of a scenery will it lead into abstraction? Is this new solitude so delicious, so pictures can be more liquid, painterly and ephemeral? This is how I started my series Alpine Views - Silent Red. Trying to describe my work in words is not easy, something will always be missing in the thoughts I have or the expressions I am using and therefor might diminish the pictures worth, or even worse, leave no room for the observer to create their own personal stories, to begin their conversations with my pictures, but I try: I walk the mountains - I see their beauty, I see the changes everywhere, more and more, faster and faster. It is a story of beauty and sadness, my own sadness about the changes and my feeling that there is another landscape hidden beyond the one we can see, maybe one that is deeply hidden in our selfs, in our ancient origin. I feel it like a living, breathing creature and I ask myself, will it just slowly blur, finally fade away and disappear until it is just a melancholic memory or will it suddenly come to life and strike back with all its force? The work could be made in any region, I chose my Alpine surroundings because it is the area I live in and know best and as in my entire series I am carried by my all-time intention to immerse into my chosen subjects, to give objects a type of subjectivity, increasing their status with an autonomous materiality, form, and line and by trying this, set them into a new context. My series will go on and eventually develop its language into something even surprising for myself. The limited edition fine art print is produced with utmost care and attention as archival chromogenic print (c-print) on Kodak Endura premiere silkmatte paper. The unreflective matte surface enhances the colour richness, vibrancy and sharpness of the photography. Each print is signed, numbered and titled by the artist and will be delivered with text and a certificate of authenticity.
