About The Artwork

PHOTOGRAPH Silver Cholla (Cylindropuntia echinocarpa) One of many types of Cholla Cactus, the Silver Cholla grows in Northern Mexico and all over the southwestern United States, including California, Arizona, and Utah. It has white spires all over a thick, branch like structure and thus serves as a lovely home for many nesting birds in the sparse environments in which it grows. Between March and June. they become less scary as they put out beautiful greenish yellow flowers among all of their spikes. FRAME Woman’s Tongue (Albizia lebbeck) Albizia Lebbeck, as it is scientifically known, is native to the Indian subcontinent and Myanmar. It is commonly grown in Australia and other tropic and subtropic places. I get my supply of Woman’s Tongue from Key West, Florida where it is invasive. A wood salvager who has removed the trees from construction sites and properly mills and drys the wood rather than sending it to the dump is my source for a lot of my wood. THE ELEMENTS Fire, Water, Earth, and Air In the display case in the bottom of the frame, four items are preserved glass vials. The items represent the elements: fire (wood charcoal), water (mineral oil), earth (soil), and air (a milkweed seed). I include these items in my work as a symbol of the interconnectedness of all life on earth, and as a reminder that humans must do better.

My love for photography has grown from my love of animals. Photographing animals is a deeper way to connect with nature, and animals as individuals. Sharing this connection with humans makes the whole process even more fulfilling. I started out experimenting with photography with my iPhone and a pair of binoculars. In the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge in Sanibel, FL around sunset, I spotted a Yellow-crowned Night Heron sitting atop a Red Mangrove. The bird was too far away to capture with my iPhone camera alone, but when I used my binoculars with the phone, I was able to snap a rather nice photograph of the beautiful bird. As I have become more serious about photography I’ve acquired more appropriate equipment and refined the story I am trying to tell with my art. I strive to reveal animals in the moment, when they’re most being themselves. In the wild, animals are inextricably connected to and affected by the ecosystems in which they live and die. All residents of the planet Earth are bound together in the singular planetary ecosystem called the biosphere. Through my art, I hope to inspire people to recognize this truth, to see and feel our interconnectedness with all life, and through such awakened awareness begin to drive the desire for real change.
