- WE DO PASSPORT PICTURES - When I arrived in England I got a job at a photographic studio and print lab, where I shot a lot of photos for passports. I usually laid a neutral background behind the subject and I kept telling people to look straight into the camera, not tilt head, do not smile, do not make any expression. It was the exact opposite of photos of daily life that customers use to print: it was a standardized and cold moment. Those photos would be used for documents or little books in which the answer to the question Who am I? is a name and a photograph. The photos once printed were cut with a tool that removes the faces to deliver them to the customer. Of that brief meeting there were only scraps of photo paper. I started looking at that with interest. The holes reminded me of the windows from which the landscape has ran away. Looking the edges, the photographs were still able to document the color of the clothes and of the skin, sometimes the voluminous hair, but there was none: the face was gone, had disappeared from memory. In this case the photography was useful in its mechanical reproduction to document something, some details, but its very practical purpose made evade the subject. It seemed to me the exact metaphor of the crowded metropolis in which we live: so many faces absorbed from the routine of work, disappeared. Without social identity or memory anymore.
