About The Artwork

The image comes from a complex of limestone cliffs in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The cliffs drop straight down into the water of Lake Superior so they can only be seen or photographed from a boat. Because the cliffs are north facing, the colors that come out of the stone remain vivid in the absence of direct sun. Like most of my work, the image is intended to be peaceful and relaxing. The three-dimensionality, resulting from the fine texture of the paper and the absence of glass, is remarkable. Most viewers are convinced they're looking at a painting.

My more serious photographic work began through long wilderness treks in the High Sierras around Yosemite. Surrounded by grand vistas and natural wonders, I felt driven to capture grand panoramic landscapes. But once I began to really see the abstract forms, colors and textures that abound in nature, all my preconceptions of what my work should be were fundamentally changed. In a sense, I was set free. Now I find that images are everywhere. I love creating photographs whose origins may not be readily clear. This kind of abstraction can lead to images that are peaceful, but also a bit mysterious. When viewers ask, “What is that?” I feel I’ve succeeded in some way. My work is not socially or politically motivated, my only goal is to make photographic art that people enjoy living with every day.
