About The Artwork

The story is told that Edward Steichen (co-founder along with Alfred Stieglitz of the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession) as an experiment, over a period of many months made a series of over 1000 exposures of a simple white cup & saucer using as many different lighting configurations. His goal was to produce an image that exhibited the entire gamut of tonality from blackest black to whitest white and illustrate his belief (as it is mine) that even mundane subject matter could be photographed to produce an attractive image. I found the idea as intriguing as it was challenging. Unfortunately none of Steichen's "Cup & Saucer" images exist today. I like to think this is how one of them may have looked.

Born in Greenwich Village, New York , Oculus became interested in photography as a child when gifted an old twin-lens reflex camera by a relative. A casual relationship with photography ensued and continued until at the University he became involved in an anthropological study that involved photographing the garbage of numerous residents in a variety of different neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs of New York. Upon reviewing the images for the purpose of creating an inventory of the items found, cataloging and comparing the items in order to draw sociological conclusions, he noticed that many of the images were visually and aesthetically fascinating. It was then that he realized that virtually ‘anything’ could be photographed to produce beautiful images. During the late 80’s through mid 90’s oculus was a regular contributor to the Spanish edition of the Miami Herald and the Miami New Times and has produced work for clients such as Eastman Kodak, PepsiCo, Reuters News Service, Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, Holiday Inn, Paradise Island Resort & Casino, StoCorp, Alcoa, Phelps-Dodge, Warner Bros.,.et al. His work has appeared in numerous publications including newspapers, magazines, brochures, annual reports and textbooks and can be found in corporate and private collections.
