About The Artwork

Portrait of an injured lion in Etosha National Park, Namibia. If the lion once reigned supreme on the African continent, its populations are now fragmented and decimated by man. According to scientists, the species could disappear by 2050. In Africa, the lion now only lives in 15% of what was once its entire territory. This rapid disappearance is mainly due to man and poaching, which is still very present. As tiger bones and rhinoceros horns have become very scarce, lions are hunted for their bones, which are used as an alternative in Chinese medicine. Southern and Eastern Africa are areas of high tourist potential, so these regions protect lions to keep attracting tourists. West Africa being much less visited, lions are worth much more money when they are dead. Sad statement for such beautiful animals that I had the chance to photograph in freedom...
