About The Artwork

The Bicycle. ^ Click on Prints (next to where it says Original) to see the print details ^ Delightful memories of riding, touring and maintaining my bicycle over the years were the inspiration for this picture. Following cubist principles, the picture is made up from several parts of a bicycle seen from different viewpoints. My artwork explores the cross-overs between photography, collage, digital art and cubist paintings as a way of capturing memories and imagination. The pictures are created using a pen and ink style digitally, based upon my own photographs, and are printed with high-definition inks on stretched canvas. I chose to separate the parts, rather see the cycle as a whole since in real life we tend to look at each part in turn. The picture flows from left to right with a wheel entering the frame from the left and a pedal crank in different positions to give a sense of motion. Coloured stripes in the background represent different locations and tapering spots have been used to give a false sense of perspective and a homage to cycle racing events. Expressionist and cubist principles like abstraction, fragmentation and false colour have been used to help the viewer imagine the scene, rather than pictorial realism characteristic of traditional photographs.

I help bring interest to interior spaces through creative and dramatic fine art pictures. I have been a creator all my life from a childhood with construction toys and later as a professional engineer. Having been gifted my first camera in 1969, I have maintained an interest in photography since then, studying the subject more seriously in recent years. I specialise in capturing ordinary subjects and making them extra ordinary using closeups, lighting, colour or editing to help create mood, inspiration, or interesting talking points. I have a passion for taking time to notice the natural beauty that surrounds us, from the depths of space to the small creatures sharing our lives. In my work I try to encourage the viewer to see the ‘everyday’ in a new light by emphasising the extraordinary nature of its complexity or including it an arrangement to suggest an idea or a concept.
