About The Artwork

The full title of Nietzsche work is “The Birth of Tragedy or Hellenism and Pessimism.” Based on the text, we see a contradiction between the Apollonian and Dionysian as a contradiction of order and chaos, creating the origins of ancient drama. We distinguish between two basic semantic layers of the image which are tragic and comic. The first layer is the actual reference to the ancient tragedy. We see a model in a dramatic pose, rather peculiar characters of ancient tragedies. The model has right “classic” profile features. Black and white fragment of the neck, head and hair gives the impression of artificiality, as if the model was wearing a mask, or it would have been an ancient marble head on the living body. We can not say whether the figure represents the Apollonian or Dionysian nature, it can be treated one or another way. Model’s curly hair create deepthoughtful and sophisticated image. They are not only the rays of sunlight, but, at the same time, as if they were the snakes on Medusa’s head. So, possible associations are with ancient crowned marble heads, but also with the head of Medusa. Rectangular objects are disorderly unbalanced and lie at different angles to each other almost as if they were “floating” relatively to each other, but the model proudly holds her head up and her posture shows her stepping firmly over the obstacles. The second layer of this artwork is a comedic and ironic one. Objects falling around cause strong reaction of a model. Perhaps the world “crumbles” into pieces and “collapses” aroung her. She throws her hands dramatically up in the air, and is in a position of unstable equilibrium, emotionally moving to a particular solution of her problems. Maybe she just slipped and now is inevitably going to fall. Made in Collaboration with Vitaly Korneev https://sophievital.wordpress.com Limited edition print #1 of 20. Plaque mounted print.

Everyone can press the camera's shutter button and take a picture, but does that mean that now we are able to better express our view on the world? Although it is assumed that the photo can correctly display three-dimensional world, it can not, and every photographer knows that the point of shooting, along with lighting, determines how the photo will look. Simple changing of focus' depth changes perception. The point of view travelling in three dimensions gives a lot of possibilities from which some one only realizes in a photograph. Throughout its history, painting has developed a lot of two-dimensional illusion of three-dimensionality, but none of them is not final. You can always go beyond what was suggested yesterday. Plane has its own graphic will and its demands to the painting. We are moving from photography to painting, developing new parallel ways of understanding the three-dimensional world in applying it onto a two-dimensional surface. Artistic field that we study is how to conclude a photographic image within the two-dimensional pictorial object. We consider photography as a starting point and premise work to change perceptions. Photography is only a starting point for changing the spatial structures which break down into simple planar components and then continue to change under the influence of different visual techniques. http://sophievital.wordpress.com/
