About The Artwork

200 years ago Abereiddy was a triving slate quarry and export port. With the onset of cheap clay roof tiles the slate industry died. The last quarrymen blasted the wall between the quarry and the sea and flooded the hole. For years it became a safe storage harbour for small fishing boats. The quarrymens cottages collapsed and the overseer' houses became farmhouses. By the 1960s the sea had begun to recover the beach, threatening the cottage ruins and the overseer' house. Conveniently Dr Beeching started closing local railways releasing sleepers and rails into the contruction industry, so a sea wall was built of them. We started visiting in the 1970s, jumping over the sea with a baby under each arm to get to the Blue Lagoon for family picnics and adventure. Sitting in the car above the sea wall to see the setting sun before bedtime, and stormwatching through the windscreen wipers. In time the adventure tourists came and populated the beach and lagoon with Lowry like crowds of black wetsuits. Then in 2014 a Great Storm tore the back out of the beach, and the National Trust decided to let it all go back to the sea. Lovers of Abereiddy decorated the wreckage of the sea wall (you can see the old sleepers and rails) with old bricks eroded into pebbles and other memorabilia and tributes before the diggers and the wrecking crew moved in. Beyond the frame of the old seawall are the arms of the bay and the eternal sea

I take photographs. I always have and always will. My many friends describe me as an "outsider" observing as much as taking part. But since Photography is essentially found art that seems fine by me.
