About The Artwork

"The flowered death" 1968. Graveyard of Guanajuato, Mexico. In 1968 I drove with my friend Pepe Merino in one day from Mexico City to Guanajuato and back. I had heard of the mummies and wanted to include them in my emerging essay on Death in Mexico. In those days the country was still open and the authorities gave us access to the naturally preserved mummies. When confronting them I selected one and carried her upstairs to the graveyard. On spotting an array of withered gladiolas I placed the mummy on the flowers. Immediately I was struck by the haunting force of the image. Half a century later, in the book, I complemented the image with this fragment of "Flor y canto", the poetry of the ancient Mexicans: Where, my dear, is my place in life? Where is my one true home? Where precisely is my mansion? I suffer here on Earth! The 56 cm print comes in a limited edition of 9. Title, author and year of manufacture are included on the print. The print comes with a 2 cm white border. Made to order on archival cotton paper in 10 days plus shipping. For open edition inkjet prints in custom size please contact mario.mutschlechner@gmail.com

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

As an industrial photographer from Cologne, Germany, based since 1967 in Mexico City, I used my craft for decades to document scenes and subjects in sharp, detailed and well lit images. Back in the seventies, when simulating views of other planets, I was looking for a different perception of reality and found it with infrared color film. Today I enjoy a creative freedom similar to that of a painter. With the right combination of photograph and digital manipulation I can create images that are a tribute to imagination and beauty. Starting in 2019 I present on Saatchiart 15 collections as a synopsis of my photography, some digitally remastered and others digitally modified, for sale as archival inkjet prints in different sizes.
