About The Artwork

The photograph "The Gaming Palace" presents a captivating and surreal tableau, capturing the grandeur of an ornate palace adorned with oversized playing cards. The opulent palace, with its intricate architectural details and majestic presence, serves as a regal backdrop to the whimsical and larger-than-life playing cards that populate the scene. The cards, with their vibrant and exaggerated presence, imbue the composition with a sense of playful extravagance and surreal enchantment. Their unexpected juxtaposition against the stately palace creates a captivating visual narrative that blurs the boundaries between reality and fantasy, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a world of whimsy and wonder. The photograph begs the viewers to revel in the enchanting spectacle and to embrace the magical fusion of opulence and whimsy.

I have been a photographer for four decades in New York and currently reside in Brooklyn. My body of work is titled Misbegotten Places, which involves creating small dioramas from photographs I have taken. Through careful camera angles and lighting, these dioramas are transformed into lifelike images that can often deceive the viewer, while always conveying a sense of "misbegotten." The lines between reality and fiction are blurred, as these lifelike dioramas, when photographed, often deceive the viewer with their uncanny realism. However, true to the collection's title, "Misbegotten Places," each scene is infused with a subtle element of the unexpected or the out-of-place, challenging the viewer's perception and inviting them to delve deeper into the narratives woven within these meticulously crafted compositions.
