About The Artwork

This remnant of tuckamore was photographed by me at Gros Morne, NL. Its twisted and gnarled branches suggest a life shaped by an inhospitable climate, and a death, likely brought on by climate change. When I learned that the locals called Gros Morne, “The Great Sombre”, I thought, what an apt metaphor for this anguished feeling for our planet that haunts us all today. The original work is a mixed media acrylic painting and photo transfer on masonite.

Born and raised in Newfoundland, Peter Harris headed west to British Columbia for adventure as a young man, and stayed. His early interests and studies in British Columbia were focused upon the arts, particularly, writing, video, photography and painting. Harris was fortunate to parlay his creative skills into a career with the City of Richmond, first as an arts instructor/curator and administrator for the city's Public Art Gallery and Arts Centre, and later, serving as Exhibit and Program Coordinator for Richmond Museum and Heritage Services. After retiring, in 2014, he resumed his life-long passion for art making in earnest. Harris now lives a bi-coastal life in two Canadian coastal communities, White Rock, British Columbia, on the Pacific Coast, and the small outport town of Trinity East, Newfoundland, on the North Atlantic Coast. Much of his time is spent creating mixed media painting and photographic works, influenced by his exposure to life and nature in these two contrasting communities, as well as his travels in British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland.
